A New Addition

This is little Oliver (#2), approx 10 weeks old (we think). I have wanted another cat for a long time. Probably since I first got Bosco actually. Having been obsessed with cats my whole life, and having surprisingly very few throughout it, the need to get another cat has been bugging my boyfriend Dan since we first got together. We lived in a flat for the first 2 years of our relationship so I knew it wouldn't be possible then so I managed to ware him down and he gave in and said when we buy a house we can get another one. Yay, victory I though. When we moved into a house recently (one in which we are still renting) the thought of a new kitten came into my mind again but was still happy with knowing we'd be buying a house in the next 2 years so I could get one then. So imagine my surprise when on the 13th of this month, on our 3 year anniversary, Dan gave me the cutest cat card which read inside "you can get another cat". I was elated!

So the search began! I knew with 100% certainty that I wanted a rescue kitty from a shelter, but it had to be a kitten to make the new addition as painless on Bosco as possible. Dan had a few rules though. The kitten had to have short hair (to counteact Bosco's mop) and preferably ginger or black and white. I rang so many shelters, vet clinics and all the RSPCAs and it seemed they were low in kittens in general (it is the middle of winter after all) and low in kittens with our specifications. On Saturday the 18th June, we decided to go for a drive to the RSPCA anyway. Such a great set up there - kittens in rooms, not cages, where you can sit with them and really see their personalities. We loved 2 in particular - a short haired tabby who couldn't stop climbing up us to sit on our shoulder and a little grey and white medium haired male who had very similar markings to Bosco, only grey where he's brown. And in the end he chose us by curling up in my lap and purring. He couldn't get enough of my attention. I wish I could've taken both kittens but the decision was made and gone were the specifications!

Just over a week into owning Oliver and he owns us! He runs the shop at home, very confident and playful but cuddly too - every night he has slept on my pillow curled up against my face. Bosco doesn't hate him either which is a nice surprise... Ollie loves trying to play with Bosco's tail, which does freak Bosco out a bit... Hopefully in time Bosco will actually love him as well.

Yay I have 2 cats!!! Still cant quite believe how lucky I am...

Thanks RSPCA. And a message to all - ADOPT, DON'T BUY. There are so many animals out there that need a home. And with a quater of a million Australian cats and dogs euthanized every year, we need to do all we can to help!
