New conservation partnership - Kariega Foundation in South Africa
I am excited to announce a new leopard conservation partnership with Kariega Private Game Reserve and the Kariega Foundation in South Africa’s Eastern Cape. Kariega incorporates 10,000 hectares of pristine African wilderness, as well as two abundant rivers - the Kariega and the Bushmans rivers. Not only do they offer a luxury safari experience, they also conduct invaluable conservation work for various species under threat including rhinos, elephants and leopards. Our connection is perfect timing as they require assistance with various leopard conservation initiatives, including a leopard reintroduction project, and I'm delighted to be assisting them with this.
Over the last few weeks we have been collaborating with Kariega's conservation team. Earlier this month the project received a huge boost when one of the camera traps photographed a male leopard on the reserve.
Kariega ecologist Chris Reynecke comments, "This is definitely an adult male African leopard and is the same one that we have been monitoring for more than a year. This is the first time we have photographs of him which shows how elusive these cats are. We have been working very closely with the farmers in the area. They are very progressive and are committed to leopard conservation. We are all very excited about this sighting."
In time we hope to put a GPS tracking collar on this very healthy looking male leopard to learn more about him, which will assist in our reintroduction plans and efforts. Stay tuned to our Facebook and Instagram over the coming months to keep updated on this very special project, and click here to find out how you can directly contribute.
